November 9, 2016
Leaderette: On November 7, a report titled “Research Results of China Employer-Employee Survey Draw the World’s Attention: A Valuable Data Source for Economic Development and Scientific Research Innovation” was posted on the front page of News Center of Wuhan University. This report was mainly about the research achievements obtained by IQDS from its China Employer-Employee Survey (CEES). Now the original report is reproduced.

Recently, Professor of IQDS Cheng Hong was invited to make a keynote speech titled “How do Chinese enterprises deal with rising labor costs?” based on the data and results of CEES in World Bank “Job and Development” Conference. His speech widely received attention from domestic and foreign experts at the conference.

Since 2012, IQDS of Wuhan University has been devoted to China Employer-Employee Survey (CEES) in cooperation with Tsinghua University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. During the survey, a large amount of valuable sample data have been effectively collected from more than 1,000 enterprises and over 10,000 employees in China, making up a national “China enterprise database”.

In 2015, CEES was conducted in some key areas of Manufacturing Development in Guangdong province. A total of 570 enterprise questionnaires and 4794 employee questionnaires were obtained. In the summer of this year, more than 240 teachers and students went to Hubei and Guangdong province and made an intensive survey on 1168 enterprises and more than 10000 employees. The number of sample regions, enterprises and employees was doubled and the coverage of survey content increased by 50%. It is planned that the CEES survey will be expanded to 8 to 9 provinces in 2017.

CEES is well recognized as the first high-quality enterprise-employee survey in a large developing economy among the international academics owing to its compact questionnaire design, rigorous random sampling and scientific quality control. The survey is characterized by its large scale, comprehensive data, authentic results and professional abilities. Currently, an international advisory committee has been established, and its members are comprised by more than 10 internationally renowned economists from Yale University, Chicago University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other world top universities, with two Nobel Prize Winners included.

Since 2016, a large volume of research results have been produced by IQDS based on the CEES survey data. Over 50 high-quality research papers have been published in journals of CSSCI or above, with integrated publications of CEES results in the special columns of Journal of Wuhan University, Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Journal of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and etc. IQDS also made in-depth cooperation with experts and scholars from internationally well-known universities such as Stanford University, Toulouse University and Waseda University. On December 5, a seminar centered on the CEES data will be held in Stanford University.

Due to the special value of the CEES data in academic research of conflicts, so far, a special Issue center on “Conflicts in China during its transition” has been set up in International Journal of Conflict Management (IJCM), a SSCI journal accredited and released by the world famous publisher Emerald. Professor Cheng Hong has been invited to serve as guest editor of the special issue, and an international conference is under preparation on this issue.
